Side Effects Associated with ProscarFinasteride is a medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men between the ages of 18 and 41. In a small number of men, BPH can cause difficulty in urinating, a condition that can affect both men and women. Finasteride works by blocking the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which pass your prostate and other tissues to your kidneys. This process helps remove the prostate-inhibiting effects of DHT. Finasteride is not approved for use in women.
Finasteride is also used to treat male infertility, especially in cases in which a man's ability to produce or use an egg is affected. In some cases, Finasteride has also been used to treat male breast cancer in malignancy.
Finasteride stops the conversion of the on-treatment hormone testosterone to DHT. Inhibition of 5-alpha reductase reduces the body's sensitivity to DHT and encourages sustained erection.
Finasteride has a few possible side effects. The most common side effects of finasteride are the reason why Proscar is not an FDA-approved medication. Consult your healthcare provider for a list of all the medications your body is taking to avoid potential side effects.
1. Decreased libido
Proscar has been known to cause decreased libido even in men with mild to moderate BPH. In some men, BPH can cause decreased libido even when BPH is treated with Proscar. This side effect occurs in less than 1 in 10 men. It is more common in men over 40.2.2 Men who have trouble with sexual performance should use Proscar only in the presence of symptoms of BPH.
2. Breast tenderness or enlargement

Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.
